Citizenship
- The Czech government offers a number of resources to help people who are applying for Czech citizenship. These resources include a website with information about the application process, a list of approved language schools, and a list of organizations that can help people with their citizenship applications.
- Applicants for Czech citizenship must be able to prove their legal residence in the Czech Republic. This can be done by providing a copy of their residence permit, a copy of their rental agreement, or a copy of their employment contract.
- Applicants for Czech citizenship must be able to prove their knowledge of the Czech language. This can be done by providing a certificate of proficiency from a recognized language school or by taking a standardized language test.
- Applicants for Czech citizenship must be able to prove their knowledge of the Czech Constitution and the history and culture of the Czech Republic. This can be done by providing a copy of their school transcripts, a copy of a book or article about Czech history or culture, or by taking a standardized test.
Grounds for Acquisition of Citizenship
Birth
A child born in the Czech Republic to at least one parent with Czech citizenship is automatically a Czech citizen.
Marriage
A person who is married to a Czech citizen may apply for naturalization after three years of marriage.
Naturalization
A person who is not a Czech citizen may apply for naturalization if they meet the following requirements:
- They have been legally residing in the Czech Republic for at least five years, or at least three years if they are married to a Czech citizen.
- They have a good command of the Czech language.
- They have knowledge of the Czech Constitution and the history and culture of the Czech Republic.
- They have no criminal record.
Process of Acquisition
The process of acquiring Czech citizenship begins with the submission of an application to the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic. The application must include the following documents:
- Proof of identity and citizenship.
- Proof of legal residence in the Czech Republic.
- Proof of a good command of the Czech language.
- Proof of knowledge of the Czech Constitution and the history and culture of the Czech Republic.
- Proof of no criminal record.
The application will be reviewed by the Ministry of the Interior. If the application is approved, the applicant will be required to take an oath of allegiance to the Czech Republic.
The processing time for an application for naturalization is typically between six and twelve months.
