Slovak Citizenship
The Slovak Republic is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area, and its citizenship can offer a number of benefits, including the right to live, work, and study in any EU member state. There are several ways to acquire Slovak citizenship, each with its own requirements.

Birth
A child born to a Slovak citizen is automatically a Slovak citizen, regardless of the child’s place of birth. A child born to non-Slovak parents in Slovakia can also acquire Slovak citizenship by birth if at least one parent has been legally residing in Slovakia for at least five years prior to the child’s birth.
Marriage
A person who is married to a Slovak citizen can acquire Slovak citizenship after five years of marriage.
Naturalization
Naturalization is the process of acquiring citizenship by a person who is not already a citizen. To naturalize as a Slovak citizen, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have lived in Slovakia for at least 8 years
- Have a good command of the Slovak language
- Have no criminal record
- Be of good moral character
Process of Acquisition
The process of acquiring Slovak citizenship begins with the submission of an application to the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic. The application must include the following documents:
- A completed application form.
- Proof of identity and citizenship.
- Proof of legal residence in Slovakia.
- Proof of a good command of the Slovak language.
- Proof of knowledge of the Slovak Constitution and the history and culture of Slovakia.
- Proof of no criminal record.
The application will be reviewed by the Ministry of the Interior. If the application is approved, the applicant will be required to take an oath of allegiance to Slovakia.
The processing time for an application for naturalization is typically between six and twelve months.
