Grounds for Acquisition of Citizenship
Birth
A child born in Ukraine to at least one parent with Ukrainian citizenship is automatically a Ukrainian citizen.
Marriage
A person who is married to a Ukrainian citizen may apply for naturalization after three years of marriage.
Naturalization
A person who is not a Ukrainian citizen may apply for naturalization if they meet the following requirements:
- They have been legally residing in Ukraine for at least five years, or at least three years if they are married to a Ukrainian citizen.
- They have a good command of the Ukrainian language.
- They have knowledge of the Ukrainian Constitution and the history and culture of Ukraine.
- They have no criminal record.
Process of Acquisition
The process of acquiring Ukrainian citizenship begins with the submission of an application to the State Migration Service of Ukraine. The application must include the following documents:
- A completed application form.
- Proof of identity and citizenship.
- Proof of legal residence in Ukraine.
- Proof of a good command of the Ukrainian language.
- Proof of knowledge of the Ukrainian Constitution and the history and culture of Ukraine.
- Proof of no criminal record.
The application will be reviewed by the State Migration Service. If the application is approved, the applicant will be required to take an oath of allegiance to Ukraine.
The processing time for an application for naturalization is typically between six and twelve months.
